History of okeechobee

“Big Water,” that’s the name given to Lake Okeechobee by the Seminole Indians and for a proper reason. Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida. FWC states “there is no comparison to Lake Okeechobee, for its wildlife, history, and lunker bass, and more specifically its size!”

Simply put, this beautiful but massive waterway is one to explore. The lake is about 37 miles long by 30 miles wide, totaling 730-square miles of water. It has an average depth of only 10 feet. To anglers nation and world-wide, it’s renowned for its number of bass it has per acre. This lake also produces more bass over 7 pounds than any lake in Florida and the United States as a whole.

The “Big O” is located south of Orlando, north of the Everglades, and pleasantly sits in the central-southern region of the state of Florida. This massive lake allows access across the state from Atlantic and Gulf sides. On the east side of the lake you can find the Port Mayaca Lock. Similarly on the western side you can find the Moore Haven Lock. In conjunction with each other, you can travel across the state of Florida by boat. Local farmlands are watered through the drainage canals that are lowered. Surrounding agricultural activities including dairy farming, crop production of winter vegetables, sugar cane, citrus fruits, sweet corn, and rice, along with cattle ranching all benefit from these locks.

Storm Effects & Water Management

In 1926 and 1928, hurricane winds and water destroyed the dikes on the lake’s southern edge, which resulted in devastation. Canals and levees were built creating a reservoir of water. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District use dikes, canals, and floodgates to help direct the water. This helps prevent flooding, saltwater intrusions, and provides water for agricultural irrigation and drinking water to urban areas in South Florida.

These water management systems and activities have greatly encumbered the water flow from Okeechobee to the Everglades. As a result, the Everglades receives times of drought and powerful discharges of water, instead of alternating wet and dry seasons.

Overall, Okeechobee is one amazing place to explore and get out on the water. Come enjoy a day on the water while soaking up Florida outdoors and landing the largemouth bass of your dreams!

What an Amazing day of Fishing

I just wanted to say thanks to our guide Capt Mark Rose for an awesome day of fishing while out in FL. I took my entire family which included my two daughters 7 and 9. They still cant stop talking about all the fish that they caught that day. Mark was really patient with them and I think between the two of them they caught a total of 32 fish in 4hrs!! I also would like to give a shout out to Capt Joe. He was out there with another family and he allowed us to take over a really awesome fishing spot and moved his group out of the way for us as they had already caught plenty of fish. Guys I cant thank you all enough. This is something my family will cherish for the rest of our lives.
